Roving Burlesque

Ready to take your burlesque performance to the next level. Many burlesque shows are presented in a roving setting, where no two shows are ever the same! In this intensive 2.5 hour workshop you will learn the art of burlesque roving, techniques you can use to rework your performances on the fly, and the foundations an act requires to ensure you engage your up-close audience every time. We will focus on improvisation skills, adaptable choreography and how to captivate the room no matter where you are performing.

At the end of the workshop you will have learnt all the tricks you need to know to deliver unbelievable close-up burlesque magic!!!
What you will learn
Key Points Covered

What is Roving Burlesque
We will discuss the differences between a stage performance and roving performance, the things to consider when roving and different ways to engage your audience in a roving setting. How to keep you, your costumes and audience members safe.

Structuring Roving Acts
Learn how to structure a roving act, creating an act that can be performed in any environment. How to plan your costumes, music and concepts to suit many different environments. Plus feeling confident in your flow and movement when roving.

Performing Anywhere
We will work on improvisation skills to allow you to adapt to different roving scenarios. Tips and tricks on preparing to perform in different spaces. Plus ways to deal with some of the unique challenges that roving burlesque performers face.
Class Information
WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY?
This 2.5 hour workshop is hosted in a dance studio and features a combination of classic burlesque style movement, open level choreography exercises, as well as sections for theory and discussion. There will be a 10 minute break halfway through the workshop.
WHAT TO BRING?
Please bring a notepad and pen to this workshop. All other costume pieces and props required are provided. Don't forget your water bottle!
WHAT TO WEAR?
Something comfortable that makes you feel cute! Leggings, bike shorts with a sports top or your favourite t-shirt are great choices. You might even consider a leotard or bodysuit.
WHICH SHOES?
This workshop will be taught in heels but you are welcome to dance barefoot, in sneakers, socks or jazz flats. Whatever feels comfortable for you. For heels we recommend a ballroom dance or chorus style heel, but any heel with a strap that you feel comfortable moving in will work.
DO I NEED TO HAVE EXPERIENCE?
This course is for performers (open level) who are looking for guidance in performing in a roving setting. It may also suit people who have attended a burlesque workshop or two, or a full term course and are looking to further develop their classic burlesque techniques.
Some of the skills taught in this workshop are also transferable to other roving art forms (circus, fire, magic etc).
WILL WE STRIP?
This workshop does not include any Burlesque striptease reveals other than the removal of gloves or skirts provided in the class. Students are welcome to bring some additional costume pieces to work with if desired.
